The coronavirus and lockdown have contained all of us. We are currently in a situation that nobody saw coming. It has become an extremely hard time for not just the victims of the corona virus, but it is a nightmare for everyone. Economies have hit rock bottom, people continue to go out of business, generating income has become a task and everything we didn’t imagine, is right in front of us. Provided everything, humans are the sole bearers of all the losses.
We all have been victims of either physical or mental grievances caused by coronavirus. While some were in the hospitals, at a war for their lives, others were struggling at home, having a roller coaster of emotions. It has not been mild on any of us. All we could see outside were empty roads, giving us occasional glimpses of the essential service providers like police, milkman, medical staff, municipal corporation etc. The “normal” was taking a new shape.
Amid all of this chaos, some things managed to slip out and mould themselves in accordance with the ongoing. Education is one of those things. Educational institutions are the future shapers of a nation and covid has not spared anyone including them. But technology played an important role here, it has yet again proven to be a blessing. Through different platforms, every institution is trying its best to conduct lectures and educate the students enrolled within. P.B. Sharma, the vice chancellor of Amity University says that the COVID lockdown has come as a blessing in disguise for Indian universities, however, the hesitation of faculties to teach through online portals has come down.
Despite the nationwide lockdown, online education has kept the education wave going. It has been a disguise for the students as well as for the teachers. In an online study, it was seen that out of 3550 teachers that were talked to, only 0.2% had effectively been able to teach through online classes. 90% of them were doing it for the first time and did not have much idea about how to do it and the rest didn’t take classes at all. On the other hand, it was observed that several students have no access to appropriate devices that could be used for attending online classes, but there’s no one to address this as the world has a bigger issue to address. This makes the fact clear that the quality of education has also been severely affected because of COVID-19.
It can be implied by this that online education in this lockdown is both a Blessing and a Curse on the students. Steps can be taken to ensure effective and proper studies of the students such as providing the students with sufficient study material, assessments through assignments etc. Government has also come up with several portals such as NREOE, DIKSHA, e-pathshala, for no cost. This is a very difficult time on all of us and it will only work if we all work in sync and be supportive.
