It’s the most egg-citing time of the year and Eastbourne is the place to be at. Being one of the most pleasant yet tranquil cities in the UK, Eastbourne has endless things to do over this little easter vacation. The best time to visit is basically just whenever you want in April, because of the countless things that you can do exclusively in this month. Even if the Easter “events” are over for later this month, the place being just one and a half hours away from London is still worthy of a visit, even if it is just for the weekend.
Eastbourne is one of the hubs for music lovers, if it sounds like something for you, there are many music-filled nights you can sit, sing along and enjoy with your usual Cod and chips, perhaps with a glass of freshly brewed beer or some wine. Most such places like the Stage Door Pub, have a zealous crowd, different age groups enjoying the open mic night on Sunday evenings. Even though most of the shops and markets shut early, a tuneful, melodic night with a little wooden platform surrounded by yellow lights, almost looking like fireflies frozen at one place in the dark sky, will certainly make up for it.
A Ferris wheel, so huge that it can be seen from anywhere if looked back at from wherever in the radius of the beach, is set up in Western Lawns till the 30th of September this year. The Eastbourne eye, which feels as if the London eye has relocated itself on the beach, happens to be the UK’s largest transportable Ferris wheel. With the nice breeze and the gradient setting sun, sitting in one of the cabins and seeing the entire city on one side and the ocean waves crashing with each other on another with a 360-degree, bird's eye view is just the thing to do in the evening.
Something that can be done during any time of the day, is walking 3 miles of the beach- where one can go on a stroll at sunrise on the pebble filled sea-side, following the horizon. During this walk is Bistrot Pierre, which is surrounded by the flavours of the tempting food that comes from their kitchen. Among their specialities is the Goan Prawn, a savoury that will take one on a journey through Indian spice culture. The well-cooked prawn melts celestially in the mouth and can be burped off with the most sophisticated, lady-like Rose Garden spritz. If there is a change of taste in the queue, they have discrete flavours of organic ice cream and sorbets, and also have vegan options- something to enjoy at any time of the day.
To make a family vacation trip more interesting, there is a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, typically for children, inspired by Alice in Wonderland on the 24th of April. For passionate music-loving parents, this is a great chance to drop off your kids at the tea party and attend the event by the London Philharmonic Orchestra that takes place on the same day. With Daniel Peoro on the violin, the tendency to experience a mix of the English countryside and cityside shall not come off as a surprise. The tickets range from £15 to £35 and there are special discounts for groups too. For theatre and art enthusiasts, the Devonshire Park Theatre celebrates the return of the Eastbourne Operatic and Dramatic Society with Evita, Webber and Rice’s masterpiece, from 20th to 23rd April.
